What to Pack in New York City: Comfortable Shoes
If you’re headed to the five boroughs of New York City, you will need the right pair of shoes. Walking is one of the great pleasures of this large city. Comfortable shoes are a necessity even if you’re headed out for a ballet at Lincoln Center later in the day. Keep a pair in your bag at all times.
Most tourists stick to the borough of Manhattan. If this is where you’ll be, keep in mind Manhattan is an island. It starts at the tip of Battery Park City and then heads al the way up to The Bronx. Manhattan is crossed by over ten avenues that run from north to south and over two hundred streets that cross from east to west. Walking is one of the easiest ways to get around. Taxis get stuck in traffic. Parking is limited and expensive. Even the subway may require a ten-block walk from one station to the next.
With the exception of certain upscale restaurants, there is no dress code in the city. Bring your most comfortable shoes. Bring the ones you’ve already worn well that feel good the second you put them on. In a single day, you might spend hours roaming the corridors of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, walk along Fifth Avenue for dinner and then hit a Broadway show. In doing so, you will spend many hours on your feet in a single day even if you are taking taxis in between. You need shoes that can stand up to your daily demands.
