Cheap seats or hot meals? You can’t have both.

American is gutting the rear of its planes to make more economy class seats. That will lead to higher seat capacity (four extra seats per plane) on all 327 of its MD-80 jets, or a total of about 1,300 extra seats to sell each day.

It also means hot meals for economy-class passengers, already a casualty of airline cuts, may never return on the airline. Why? Because the seats will be going where the galley kitchens are today. The work is expected to be completed in about a year.

Personally, I say more power to American. Good move. Increased seat capacity is a very good thing for consumers—the higher the capacity, the lower the fares. And who really likes airline food anyway?
