Things to Do in Castellon de la Plana, Spain

Castellon de la Plana Things to Do

Castellon de la Plana is the capital city of the province of Castellon. With incredible historic sights that draw visitors from around the world, Castellon de la Plana has a lot of things to do.

Cathedral of St. Mary

The Cathedral of St. Mary was originally built in the 13th century and rebuilt after a fire that took place hundreds of years later. The present building is yet another reconstruction that was built after demolitions were ordered by the city council during the Spanish Civil War. The current, rebuilt cathedral was constructed in 1939. This is a building that has survived many chapters of history and is well worth visiting. The bell tower is one of the landmarks of Castellon.

The City Streets and Squares

Peace Square is centrally located in Castellon and acts as the gateway to Main Street and all of its stores. It is lined with cafes and is home to the city’s Neo-classical theater. Plaza Mayor, the city’s main square, acts as the real heart of the city and its most interesting sites, including Castellon’s main buildings: the Central Market, the City Hall, and the Cathedral Church of St. Mary. Knights Street, meanwhile, is one of the most charming corners of Castellon. It is the main thoroughfare in the pedestrian area and is lined with orange trees and old buildings. Knights Street is home to the Hemp Exchange, a XVII century construction whose name reflects the importance that the hemp plant once held for trade in the region.

Entertainment

On the walk from the train station to the historic city center, you’ll pass the bullring, which is still in use. It is a roughly circular amphitheater with terraced rows of seats. At the city center itself, you’ll find a casino, which allows visitors to play on slot machines, place sports bets, or stop for a round of Bingo.
