Bucharest Shopping – Shops, Stores, Best Buys, and Inside Tips

Bucharest Shopping

A variety of local shops and several modern malls afford visitors to Bucharest an interesting and unique shopping experience.

Antiques and Souvenirs

RomArt sells a wide variety of embroidery, dolls, carvings and interesting souvenirs. The Romanian Peasant Museum, the Village Museum, and most department stores carry items made by local craftsmen such as embroidered clothing and linen, painted or beaded eggs, carpets, pottery, and woodcarvings. Many places in Bucharest sell antiques. Two of the best are Hanul cu Tei on Lipscani Street and Craii de Curtea Veche on Covaci Street. At Curtea Sticlarilor, glassmakers use a series of ovens, dating to 1857, to create intricate vases, glasses, fruit bowls, and pretty much anything else made from glass. For handmade art, Wagner on Armeneasca has a good selection. The Hanul cu Tei Complex in the historic quarter houses a large number of shops that carry paintings, sculptures, jewelry, tapestries, and many other types of artwork.

Malls and Markets

Opened in 1999, the modern Bucharest Mall has four levels, a large supermarket, a food court with over 20 restaurants, a multiplex cinema, a video arcade, and plenty of shopping. Located on Piata Unirii, the Unirea Shopping Center has over two-hundred shops including a number of western stores and fast food restaurants, such as The Body Shop, McDonalds, and KFC. Along with the usual mall stores and plenty of room to walk around, the Orhideea Shopping Complex also has a Carrefour Supermarket. Just north of the city, the Dragonul Rosa Chinese market sells just about anything one can buy, and at great prices.
