Borobudur Transportation

Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple and one of the greatest Buddhist monuments ever created. Located in Indonesia, travel to Borobudur can be done by car, taxi, or bus.

Taxi

Borobudur is actually located about a 45-minute drive from central Yogyakarta. If you want to take a taxi to Borobudur, get your hotel to call and arrange transportation and ask them to help negotiate the price. A taxi ride for the journey should cost no more than 150,000 Rupiah, or $16 USD, each way. A whole day’s service to and from the site should cost no more 300,000 Rupiah, or a little more than $30 USD. Although you can also take the bus, a taxi is probably the better way to go if there are only a couple of guests in your party. In some cases, you might be able to take transportation provided by your hotel. When returning from the temple, it may be possible for you to negotiate a lower price than normal. The price for a taxi can go as low as $8 USD.

Bus

Most visitors go to Borobudur from Yogya by tour bus, and any of the hotels will make arrangements for you. If you’re arriving in Jogjakarta and going directly to Borobudur temple, you can use the local bus terminus to catch a bus to Magelang or Muntilan. From either location, you can catch a bus to the Borobudur terminus. These rides will take approximately two hours. You can also head to the temple from Semarang. The port town of Semarang is some 100 kilometers away, but the journey can take more than 3 hours even with a police escort. Visitors to Borobudur should make sure they have ample time to travel on the busy roads leading out of Semarang.

Air

Getting to Borobudur requires traveling from one of the nearby cities. There are many daily flights from Surabaya, Jakarta, and Semarang to Jogjakarta from which you can continue your trip by taxi or bus. Some flights are relatively short, such as the flight from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, which takes about 50 minutes.
