Transportation in Gibraltar: Border Crossing
Gibraltar is a beautiful and densely populated sovereignty located at the tip of the Iberian Peninsula. Tourists visiting the area can cross the Spain-Gibraltar border in a number of ways, so you may want to consider the different options when planning a trip here.
Crossing on Foot
Crossing the border into Gibraltar by foot can be both easy and exciting. The only land crossing into the area is situated on an active airport runway, which means you get a close-up view of the local airport’s inner workings. Be sure to stay within the designated pedestrian walkway for safety, If you choose this method, park your car at La Linea de la Concepcion in Spain and walk to the border crossing.
Crossing by Car
You can cross into Gibraltar by car, but be advised that the lines tend to be long, particularly on your way back into Spain. Gibraltar is a tax-free zone, and Spanish officials can sometimes hold up the line by searching cars for goods purchased in Gibraltar. If you do plan to drive, call the Frontier Queue Hotline in advance to get updates about delays.
Visas and Passports at the Border
Just as with crossing any other international border, you’ll need to have the proper documentation with you before entering Gibraltar. The sovereignty is a territorial holding of the United Kingdom, so most visa rules and regulations that apply to the U.K. will apply here as well. If you do need a visa to travel, you’ll need to fill out the appropriate application and have the proper fees, proof of hotel reservations, and a return ticket to apply. Travelers from some nations may be able to enter with just a visa.
