Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. Besides being known as the birthplace of America’s favorite lunch meat, the city has plenty to offer tourists, especially those looking for entertainment.

Bars, Pubs, Cafes

Like most of the World, Italians like to have fun. Bologna is filled with colorful, unique bars and pubs. At the corner of Piazza Maggiore, tourists and locals alike can drink amongst beautiful fountains and historic architecture. Tre Santi is a particularly well visited pub in the area. It’s the perfect place to take a break for a beer or a glass of the local wine. If you’re in the mood for a night out with friends, try NU Lounge Bar, Celtic Druid, or one of the many discos in the area. English Empire and other pubs can be found throughout Bologna, so you’ll have plenty of options are the city to drink and have fun.

Tourists who prefer coffee over alcohol have plenty of choices as well. Cafes are scattered throughout the city and are a great place to converse with the locals. Cafe delle Drapperie is a pastry shop, live music venue, and sells wine and beer. Whether you’re in the mood for an espresso, a chilled white wine, or simply there to listen to a local band, it’s a great place to spend a few hours.

Restaurants 

Bologna, like other cities in Italy, is famous for its local cuisine. Cured meats, fresh cheese, quality vegetables and fruit are easy to find. Cantina Bentivoglio is a well known jazz bar with an assortment of wine, cheese, and meat. Located in the university quarter, they have over 400 wines to select from. If you enjoy jazz, wine, and affordable entrees, this is the place for you. Rosa Rose is a great restaurant for pre-dinner drinks and appetizers. Via del Pratello is in the city center and is lined with bars, clubs, shops, and pubs. Near the San Francesco church, it’s a frequent hangout for university students.

Theatres

Bologna has many theatres and cinemas. Opera is serious in Bologna, so if you’re in the mood for a cultural experience, book a show. Make you sure you do so well in advance, as operas sell out quickly in this area of the world. Cinemas are prevalent in the city, especially near campus. The university students also put on several performances throughout the year, so check the university’s website for information on showtimes and dates.
