Places of Old

Bodrum Castle draws tourists in with its grandeur and imposing stature. People describe it as dominating the city, with excellent views and a vibrant past. Learn more about history and folklore alike as a unique way to get to know the area and its people.

You should also check out the windmills, which are an important part of the city as well. You can see them on hills from all over the peninsula and you can see them especially clearly from the beaches.

Take a Cruise

The most famous way to get around on the water seems to be by gulet. This special type of boat is made from wood and specific to Turkey. There are a variety of choices of boats to get around, making for better prices and tour guides because of all the competition. You can snorkel, explore, or just relax in the sun as you take in the sights. There are a number of small retreats off the area to visit, so this is a great activity for those who want to get the lay of the land (and sea).

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus

This tomb was made for a local ruler in Persia, and and it was finished by his wife in 353 BCE. It was declared as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World for its amazing sculptures. While much of it is gone, there are still some things worth seeing if you happen to be in the area. There is also a small museum where you can look at carvings and relics from the area.

Leisure Time

Turgutreis Beach is beautiful, clean, and typically void people. There are also restaurants, bars, and a crowded flea market (on Saturdays) along the marina. One traveler suggests that if you like wind surfing, there’s a spot between Bodrum and Akyarlar where you’ll get the best winds. However, you’ll probably still have a great time even if you do stick with Mother Nature in Turgutreis.
