Boat to Key West – Transportation

Key West Transportation

Key West is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the United States. Many famous people have made their home there, including the author Ernest Hemingway. The climate, beaches, and great nightlife draw a huge number of people to the area. If you are planning a trip to Key West, here are some transportation tips to make your trip a lot smoother.

Ferry Service from Miami

One popular way to get to Key West from Miami is to take a ferry. There is a multitude of ferry services that make the trip from mainland Florida to the Keys. There are also trips that leave from Fort Myers beach on the gulf side of Florida. One popular company is the Key West Shuttle. Their boats are about 150 feet long and have two fully enclosed cabins. One leaves from Ft. Myers beach and one leaves from Marco Island.

Cruise Ship

Many people travel to Key West as part of a cruise. The sunset views aren’t quite as good as the ferry from Florida and can block the view of some people on the beach. The Sunset Celebration happens at Mallory Square and this is where the cruise ships dock.

Drive

Many choose to travel to the keys by driving. It’s an island, but there is an extensive bridge from the mainland that can take you there. Some prefer it because you really get oriented with the area as you come in and get a fuller experience. There is also an airport on the island where you can fly in if you so desire. When you drive in you also have a car while you are on the island which gives you a lot more freedom to get around.
