And I’m not talking nightclub here. Avis is starting a program in 10 major U.S. cities that gives people the option of renting a wireless hotspot along with their rental car. It costs $10.95 per day, which probably doesn’t make it the cheapest Wi-Fi option in town, but it does offer appealing flexibility, since the hotspot is apparently portable.
When it becomes available in the next few months, hotspots will be available with car rentals in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York (metro area), San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Incidentally, AutoNet Mobile, the company that is providing the technology to Avis, is also selling units directly to consumers. They cost $400 initially, and then there’s a $50 per month subscription fee.
