American will test in-flight Internet in 2008

Finally, an airline extra worth paying for!

American Airlines announced yesterday it will test in-flight broadband on its 15 Boeing 767-200 aircraft early next year. The broadband test will be conducted on transatlantic routes, but could expand if the early results are good.

According to a report in USA Today, American says its pricing hasn’t been determined, but the service “will be slightly more expensive than ground Wi-Fi hot spots.”

The in-flight broadband “will provide passengers with wireless Internet connections for laptops, smart phones and other personal digital assistants equipped with Wi-Fi antennae,” says USA Today. American will block the use of Skype and other Internet phone services to eliminate air-to-ground phone conversations.

Needless to say this is fantastic news for those of us with Internet addictions.
