American Airlines’ main computer system crashed Tuesday, bringing the airline’s daily operations to a halt. All American flights were grounded for hours, although flights already in the air were able to continue as scheduled.
Travelers across the U.S. were stranded, as American Airlines gate employees worked to assist passengers without technology.
American offered flyers the chance to reschedule their flights for free, and also offered to book passengers on another airline and cover the fare difference. Unfortunately, American was unable to process those changes and refunds while their computer system was down.
CBS News reports that American Airlines released a statement on Tuesday, saying, “Despite the magnitude of today’s disruption, we are pleased to report that we expect our operation to run normally with only a small number of flight cancellations expected tomorrow. We will add additional flights, as needed, tomorrow to ensure our customers are able to continue their travels.”
Expect full flights, delays, and cancellations today, if you are flying on American.
