Albufeira is located in the Southern-most part of Portugal and attracts thousands of summertime residents and tourists who come to enjoy the golf courses, marinas, restaurants, and bars in and around the city. Here are some transportation tips if you are going to use taxis, buses, trains, and the airport to get to and around Albufeira.

Regional Buses

The Albufeira Terminal Rodoviário (the regional bus terminal) is a main point of transportation to and from the town. The terminal connects Albufeira with other major cities along the Algarve by Trans Rapido express buses and the Carreiras Interurbanas buses that follow a longer and slower route along the coastal villages.

Local Buses

The local bus network, called Giro, covers the entire city with four different routes identified by different colors. Most of these buses operate every 30 minutes and tickets for the bus are sold by the driver.

Train Station

The Albufeira train station is in nearby Ferreiras and is about 3.5 miles (6.5km) from the old town. There are local buses going to and from Albufeira. The ride takes about 15 minutes. You can also get a taxi at the station to get into the city. If you would like to explore the Algarve region by train, you can buy an inexpensive 2 or 3-day rail pass.

Taxis

Don’t try to hail a taxi by going out onto the street as they are not allowed to stop. If you need a taxi, have the hotel personnel call one for you. Most of the time a taxi will arrive within 3 minutes. In the old town, there are also a number of taxi stands you should use.  Many of the taxi companies also offer a direct shuttle service to the Faro airport.
