According to a new travel blog posting, the father of an 11-year-old boy, traveling on an unaccompanied minor program, claimed that a flight attendant removed $200 in “emergency” cash from the boy’s wallet. The flight attendant denies the theft, and an investigation is ongoing. This report raises two issues:
- Unaccompanied minors typically carry their tickets and other travel documents in a pouch around their necks for easy access by flight attendants. There’s no reason, however, why minors need to put any cash they’re carrying in the pouch. If the minor’s travel document is in a wallet of some kind, the easy solution is a second wallet for cash that need not be surrendered to the airline.
- This seems to be a rare occurrence, and unless it happens frequently, there is probably no need for any of us to add another dozen or so items to the laundry list of “before you leave” travel “tips” we all too often feel compelled to print. Let common sense prevail.
