Agra Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

Agra Things to Do

Agra is a large city in the northern part of India in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so there are plenty of things to do for travelers to the area.

Visit the Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is one of the most instantly recognizable sites in the entire world, so your trip to Agra would not be complete without a visit to this world-famous landmark. However, there is so much more to this UNESCO World Heritage Site than just its well-known outward appearance. You’ll have the chance to get up close and see the massive attention to detail that has been paid to all aspects of its construction. The surrounding gardens and mausoleums are quite spectacular as well, so plan to spend at least one full day here.

Tour the Red Fort

The Red Fort is the second of Agra’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In the past, it was used as both a royal palace and as a defensive structure. The Indian military still uses portions of the fort to this day. The four main gates are marvels of the region’s architectural style, on top of being nearly impregnable. The interior gardens of the fort will take your breath away.

Stop by Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is the third UNESCO World Heritage Site in Agra. About 45 minutes outside of Agra itself, Fatehpur Sikri was originally intended to be the capital of the region back in the 1500s. However, it was abandoned shortly after its establishment due to difficulty in supplying water to the city. The palace and shrines have all been expertly maintained over the years and are an amalgamation of Hindu and Muslim architecture.

Do Some Shopping

The Warehouse of Gifts and Souvenirs is your best bet when looking for trinkets to bring home for yourself or for friends and family. The prices are low and the selection is diverse, so take your time to wander throughout before settling on a particular item. The Marble Handicraft Emporium also has some spectacular finds, but be prepared to haggle and to firmly say no, as the salespeople can be quite pushy. Be wary of shopping recommendations from taxi drivers, as they will recommend the shops that give them the largest commissions, not necessarily those that are best for what you are looking for.
