Aachen Nightlife – Clubs, Bars & Nightlife Tips

Aachen Nightlife

Originally known for its many hot springs where Roman soldiers and even Charlemagne came to heal after their many battles, Aachen today is the German part of the economic power triangle EUREGIO with The Netherlands and Belgium.  A large university with a globally diverse faculty and students, nightlife in Aachen is as plentiful as the gargoyles on the many gothic structures around the city.

Aachen Clubs, Bars and Discos

Because of the high international student population there are an abundance of places that cater to this global community. If you start in the Pontstrasse area near the Hof, then travel towards the Dom there are bars, clubs, movie houses, coffee shops all open well into the early hours. One of the oldest bars in the city-aging but always lively and busy in the evening is the Domkeller. They have tables outside overlooking the HOF square and the dome, a lovely meeting point to start out the night. Moving though the lively streets, many of the bars offer live music or EDM for those who love EuroPop.  Dance the night away at Nox and Club Nightlife.   Most of the bars and clubs are open until 2am but if you want afterhours on the weekend, end your evening at the Last Exit which closes when the last patron stumbles home.

Theater, Cinema and People Watching

The Theater Aachen is home of the Aachen Symphony.  While it is well known for hosting live theatrical productions, a classic film festival and educational programs about the history of the arts in Aachen, it is best known as a music venue ranging from high opera such as Wagner’s The Rings to concerts and Broadway style musicals.

Cinema Apollo, located just off the Pontstrasse plays first run and art house type movies. In addition they have a full bar and one of their rooms is turned into a club after 11pm on the weekends.

Aachen at night is a visual delight with its stunning architectural mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque to modern classics, many of them with feature lighting and open to the public.  Each square has a fountain with cafes and bars nearby but envision sitting on a bench with cobblestones beneath your shoes wondering if those are the same that once held the feet of Charlemagne. .
