Taroko Gorge Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Taroko Gorge Transportation

You need to know that the Taroko Gorge is a really remote place. The best way to visit this area is to take a tour or pre-arrange your travel plans with a driver and car in advance because local “on- demand” transportation is almost non-existent.

Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus

For touring Taroko Gorge it is a good idea to catch the tourist shuttle bus from Hualien Station that runs throughout the area.  Be careful about the time that you arrive because even if you get there, you may not have the easiest time getting back.

Taiwan Tour Bus

If all you have is a day to check out Taroko from Taipei and you’re on a budget, there’s the availability of many Taiwan tour buses to get you there and to bring you safely back. For first time travelers to this area, taking a tour bus is highly recommended.

Train Connections

Taking the train from Taipei to Taroko is a way many tourists use to get there. The train is a scenic way to get from Taipei to Hualien and the Taroko Gorge area. It’s about 3 hours one way, so you need to be prepared for a long ride to go there and to come back.

To get to Taroko by train you need to go to Sincheng. From there you can catch a connecting bus into the national park. The train is a really wild and rough ride and the bus ride is even crazier. This is not the kind of thing you want to do unless you have the adventure spirit mixed with a bit of a suicidal death wish.

Private Guide and Driver for Taroko Gorge

If you can afford the expense, the best way to visit Taroko Gorge is to hire a private car and its driver to take you exactly to where you want to go and to bring you safely back to your hotel in Taipei. This is the very best way to enjoy a visit to this area. You will have all the time you need to see the sights without ever having the feeling that you are rushed or dependent on the schedule of other people on the tour bus.
