Animals in Orlando and Other Warnings and Dangers

Warnings and Dangers in Orlando: Animals

Orlando is a Floridian paradise and a popular vacation destination. You want to enjoy your time in town, so while out and about, be sure you understand the alligator and other animal dangers to be found in the region.

Alligators

Assume there are alligators in every natural body of water in Orlando. You might even see them in ponds near hotels or floating in the lakes on the sides of the road. If you happen to see one, it’s best to steer clear. Alligators are pretty speedy in the water but they can also move swiftly on land. Don’t approach, try to touch, feed, or attempt to take a picture with one.

Other Critters

There are some other wildlife in Orlando that visitors might encounter in the water or the forests. You should be aware of:

  • Coral snakes
  • Water moccasins (aka cottonmouths)
  • Eastern diamondback rattlers
  • Pigmy rattlers

Always watch for any kind of snake, reptile or animal while anywhere in Orlando but especially in less urban areas.

Bugs and Birds

Don’t walk around Orlando without shoes, especially in the grass. There are fire ants and other nasty little critters that will bite. If you are allergic it insect bites, you’ll want to carry your antihistamines in case of a bad reaction. Some people who get bit here might get a reaction even if they aren’t typically allergic to bugs. The mosquitos also tend to swarm more when it rains. Sea gulls are great to photograph but watch out for their “bombing missions” (aka bird droppings). You don’t want to be caught underneath one, especially when looking up. Also be careful of the flamingos – if you throw food towards them they’ll get more aggressive.
