Peterborough Things To Do – Attractions & Must See

Peterborough Things to Do

Things to do in Peterborough include visiting the cathedral, the museum and art gallery, and the Flag Fen archeology site. There are also nice parks to enjoy, ferry boat rides down the Nene River, and a steam train that is fun to ride for a visit to the countryside.

Peterborough Cathedral

This marvelous cathedral is the main attraction in the city of Peterborough. Take a few hours to enjoy all the intricate details of its design. There are tours in the afternoons at 2:00 p.m..(11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays) that cover the history and many interesting details about how the cathedral was built during the 1100s.

Flag Fen Archeology Park

Flag Fen dates back to a settlement approximately 3,000 years ago during the Bronze Age. You can view preserved remains along with reconstruction of ancient houses, weapons, artifacts, and jewelry that were discovered at this site.

Peterborough Museum & Art Gallery

It is nice to visit the museum when the weather is rainy. There are exhibits about the history of the local area and local pieces of artwork to enjoy.

Parks

Nene Park is a large park about 3 miles from the city center. Nene Park is laid out around a number of lakes and next to the Nene River. There are small ferry boats that are enjoyable to take for a ride down the Nene River.

In Nene Park, there is a water-sports center, a couple of cafes, and a visitor’s center providing information about local wildlife. There is also a reconstruction of the foundations of a Roman villa, which was on the site. There are caravan sites for camping and two golf courses within the park.

Ferry Meadow is Peterborough’s largest park. Ferry Meadows is a favorite park for picnics, boating, and a day’s outing for the family. There is a mini-train for the kids to ride, a small café to have a snack, and the ruins of a Roman Fort to explore.

Nene Valley Railway

This vintage steam train offers a nice jaunt from the city to the countryside. It stops at a village some 15 miles away for a break and then returns to the city.
