Colmar Things To Do – Attractions & Must See

Colmar Things To Do

Beautiful Alsatian Colmar is in the northwestern part of France right next to the German border. Lined with cobblestone streets and canals, it’s a city on of museums and art.

The Historic Old Town

The center of Colmar is small but picturesque. Strolling the streets of the older center of town and then heading for a canal trip offers a direct look at this elegant place. Start with a walk down the Grand Rue, a street of wonderful old houses, and shops and cafes under a covered market. Tour the L’Ancienne Douane or the Old Customs House. Dating from the 1400’s, this hall was the center of commerce in the city. You can tour the Fisherman’s Quarter where the town catch was unloaded. If you’re tired of walking, board the Petit Train for a four mile tour of the area with narration in English. If you’re here during the Christmas season, explore the five traditional Christmas markets that take place along the town’s five major squares.

Little Venice

One of the most beautiful sections of Colmar is the area known as Little Venice. This is the place to get on a boat and explore the area’s canals. Small boats like the ones found in Venice offer a nice break from the land and a look at the area from the waters.

Museums

Colmar has several museums worth touring. Start with the Unterlinden Museum. It offers a huge collection of medieval art. If you have kids or love trains and toys, head for the he Animated Museum of Toys & Little Trains. This one offers three floors of toys, dolls and other kid’s toys. Colmar has a connection with America. Batholdi conceived and designed the Statue of Liberty. Visit the Batholdi Museum dedicated to his work. The Natural History and Ethnography Museum explores the history of the area from the start of the Ice Age to the present day. The Musée d’Art Juif or Museum of Jewish Art takes a look at the history of the Jews in this community and the art they cherished.
