Westport Things to Do

Built around Clew Bay and in the shadow of Croagh Patrick, Westport is a very fine example of a Georgian small town.  Tourists and pilgrims alike come to Westport for its history and variety of activities.

Historic Sites

By far the Westport House and its grounds are the main attraction in Westport. Every year thousands of tourists flock to Georgian mansion with its white walls, black and gold furniture and expansive salons. The setting and gardens are also quite spectacular with a view over Clew Bay. A new edition to the property is Pirate Adventure Park connecting to the original owner of the property,  Gráinne Ní Mháille, “Pirate Queen’ of Connaught.”  Westport is the starting point for the Croagh Patrick Pilgrim Trail. Follow the route to the top where it is said St. Patrick kept a fast on the mountain for 40 days in 441 AD to pray for the snakes to leave Ireland.

Get Outside in Westport

The town is one of the few planned towns laid out with wide roads and streets, the river that was channeled into a canal and runs along the MALL which is a wide avenue with rows of lime trees on both sides.  Westport, from spring to fall has many outdoor activities. There is a surf and sailing school for beginners.  Kite surfing and wakeboarding has become very popular.  Deep sea fishing in the cold waters of the Atlantic attracted sport fishermen from around the world. There are three equestrian centers  and guides for trail rides.  Along the water front is The Quay, a group of refurbished warehouses turned  into bars, cafes and shops.
