Trains To/From Lisbon and Sintra, Portugal
Sintra is a popular resort town located near Lisbon. The town is known for the beautiful wilderness that surrounds it and the Sintra National Palace, which was constructed in the Moorish- and Manueline-style.
Train Travel to Sintra from Rossio Station
Travel between Lisbon and Sintra is easy and straightforward, especially by train. This is a popular destination among visitors to the area, as it is a nice day trip as travel to and from Sintra takes less than one hour on the train. This route originates at Lisbon’s Rossio station (located on Rossio square in the heart of the city) to Sintra. There are frequent trains and journey time is around 45 minutes. You can find train times, details and fares in English on the Portuguese railway website under the heading of ‘Urban Lines’ on the left-hand menu and then ‘Lisbon’.
The trains are double-decker, with comfortable seating and plenty of space. While the journey isn’t exactly scenic it’s interesting to see the outskirts of Lisbon. For the return, you can catch the same train from Lisbo’s Oriente and Santa Apolonia stations though Rossiso seems to have the most frequent services.
The price of the ticket also includes the viagem card that you can charge and use on tram, bus or underground in Lisbon. The station in Sintra, while small, is unique and contains paintings around the main lobby that make it special.
The train station in Sintra is a 15-20 minute walk from the town center. When you exit the train, you will see an information booth where you can get tourist information right in the station; including free maps that will easily lead you to the Old Quarter, and other sights around town. Alternatively, you can catch bus number 434 (see separate tip) which operates on a loop between Sintra’s main sights: the town center, the Moorish Castle and Pena National Palace. You are able to purchase an all day ticket for this bus and the stop is directly outside the train station. Tickets can be purchased from the driver upon boarding.
