Nouméa Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport

Nouméa Transportation

Here are some tips on getting around Nouméa during your stay.

Taxi

When arriving into Noumea, if you haven’t pre-arranged your airport transfers, be wary taking a taxi into Noumea from Tontouta International Airport. The airport is located 45 kilometres north of the city, and a cab ride will cost be very expensive (over $100 USD).

Bus

A bus ride into the city will cost you just around $35 USD (depending on exchange rate).

To locate the transfer bus, exit the arrival terminal and turn immediately to the right. Follow the path toward the bus parking area. You will see the bus representatives located there. You can purchase a ticket (single or return) on arrival. Buses are always there to meet the arriving flights.

Rental Car

Depending on what your plans are, you might consider renting a car. Even though there are plenty of taxis, finding one at the right time can be difficult, and buses can be even more difficult (especially if you don’t speak French). Although most of the main attractions aren’t too far from the city, if you wanted to go out of the city, a car would be the easiest option, unless you can speak French or know someone who can.

The Port Shuttle Bus

The only way to get ashore for cruise passengers in Noumea is by shuttle bus. The port gates are just 200 meters from the ship’s pier, but the authorities will not let you walk there for safety reasons.

The big disadvantage about this bus is the one-way-traffic system that forces the bus to take a long, roundabout system of one-way streets through town, so expect to spend 30 to 45 minutes getting to and from town.
