Tips on Johannesburg Warnings or Dangers- Stay Safe!

Johannesburg Warnings and Dangers

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa. Before you visit, learn about areas to avoid, ways to protect against crime, and your transporation options.

Crime

Unfortunately, crime is problem in Johannesburg. Violent crime is rare, but you need to be on alert for pickpockets and thieves. Recent travelers have complained about cars robbed at stop lights, so always lock your doors while driving around the city. When walking around Johannesburg, keep your passport and other valuables locked away in your hotel room. As long as you stay on the main streets and keep your purses and wallets close, you’ll be fine.

Traffic and Driving Conditions

The city streets are congested, especially around before and after work. If you rent a car, drive with caution and map out where you plan to go before you hit the road. The locals are friendly, but they won’t wait around for you to get comfortable with the roads and highways.

Wildlife

Johannesburg is home to many species of wildlife, some of which can be dangerous. Snakes and spiders aren’t frequently found within the city, but they’re widespread in the rural areas. Mosquitos can carry several illnesses, so pack repellant. If you swim, stay close to shore and ask the locals if any sharks have been spotted in the area. Hippos are also native to this region of the world, so don’t take caution if you go for a hike outside the city.
