City Bus Service, Thessaloniki – Transportation

Transportation in Thessaloniki City Bus Service

Thessaloniki doesn’t have a subway or tram network in the city, so the only way for visitors to get around using public transportation is to use one of the numerous city buses. Here’s what you need to know before you get out exploring.

Bus Transport from the Airport and Rail Station

You can get bus transport at the Macedonia International Airport Terminal which goes to the city center. The buses leave every 30 minutes and it takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. The same bus also stops at the train station, so if you’re arriving by rail, you can still take the bus into Thessaloniki.

Exploring Thessaloniki by Bus

You can explore Thessaloniki on foot, however, if you don’t have much time or the heat gets to be too much for you, take the bus. There are different prices for tickets depending on what you want to do. For instance, if you pay a little more you can get a second ride at a deep discount provided that ride takes place within 90 minutes of your first trip. If you want to ride as many buses as you please, then buying a day ticket is worth the cost.

What Else to Know About Riding City Buses

Taking the bus in Greece is sometimes unpleasant. They are not usually on time and during peak hours can get very cramped. However, if you know what you’re doing when it comes to the buses while visiting Thessaloniki it’ll be a better experience.

  • Thefts are a common occurrence, guard your personal belongings, especially during peak times
  • Carrying a map makes it easier to find where you need to go
  • Tickets are cheaper if you buy from the bus stations or kiosks instead of on the bus

Be prepared, at crowded times there is often standing room only.
