Krakow Warnings and Dangers

Krakow is one of Warsaw’s largest cities. It’s a major tourist center, but there are few problems that are not always known to the casual traveler.

Air Pollution and Smoking

Air pollution in Krakow is an ongoing problem, especially during the hot summer months. If you have breathing problems, bring your medications with you. Another problem for many travelers is smoking, because smoking is not banned in Krakow. If you head to a bar or restaurant, keep in mind that you may encounter heavy smoke.

Lack of Wheelchair Access

This is a city of old buildings that have not been renovated. Some are accessible via an elevator but many are not, so make sure you find out in advance if there’s enough access if you have problems with mobility.

Keep the Change

If you say “thank you” to locals, keep in mind they may take this an indicating this means they can keep the change as a tip. Don’t say it until you’ve gotten your change back.

Animals

Krakow is home to large flocks of pigeons. Don’t feed them and stay away from them. The droppings carry dangerous diseases. Another local problem are dogs. Dog poop is a problem on the sidewalks. Many dogs are not leashed. If you see one or a pack of dogs, avoid them.

Other Krakow Concerns

Bring a long skirt and long-sleeved shirt if you are going to head to a cathedral or you may not be allowed inside,as the church is highly respected in this city. Another thing to keep to yourself are any thoughts about local soccer teams, because soccer is taken very seriously. The same goes for politics. The local politic scene can change quickly, so avoid saying anything that might get people upset with you.
