Things To Do in Drakensberg, South Africa

Drakensberg Things to Do

The Drakensberg refers to a stretch of territory along the Great Escarpment, a massive geological formation that crosses over Southern Africa. Given the large territory it encompasses, it should be no surprise that there are many things to do in the area.

Animals

Most hotels in the Drakensberg will offer horse riding for riders of all experience levels. Many different places in the Central Berg will offer rides along stretches such as the Khotso Horse Trail. They offer trails that can take anywhere from one to two hours to complete. The longer rides can take up to a full day.

The Falcon Ridge is a bird of prey center that is definitely worth a visit. It is an amazing experience to see some of these birds in action against the beautiful backdrop of the mountains. Visitors to the center can see falcons, eagles, owls and vultures in action. The program last for about an hour and combines entertainment with education. Take a hat and sun block to protect against the sun.

Finally, you can tour Penwarn and view variety of game, such as Springbok, Reedbuck, Zebra, Wildebeest, Eland, Blesbok, and Hartebeest. A drive takes you up close to these animals. There is a vulture restaurant in the area, which attracts the rare Lammergeier, Black Eagle, and Cape Vulture.

Outdoors

One destination to visit in the Champagne Valley is the rock formation known as the Sphinx. A trip to this formation lets you pass the breathtaking Crystal Falls.  The views of the Champagne Valley are grand, and another one kilometer climb will take you to the top of the Little Berg, at the Breakfast Stream. One easily viewable geographic formation is The Sentinel. The Sentinel stands at the right-hand side of the Amphitheatre. At 3,165 meters high, the Sentinel is the highest free-standing peak in the local vicinity. An easier march is one to the Cascade Pools. It’s an easy half hour walk from the Royal National Park’s car park. The pools themselves are a series of cascades, pools, and rock slides.
