Minorca Island Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Minorca Island Transportation

Taxi

Minorca is not a large island, but having a car or hiring a taxi will give you the freedom to discover it by yourself. There are many off the beaten track beaches and picturesque vistas that can be reached via taxi and a short walk. Without private transportation, these locales can be very difficult, if not impossible, to get to.

The island is heavily affected by winds, and depending on your desired activity, it may only be possible on one side of the island on a particular day. For example, sailing or snorkeling will not be possible on the windy side that has big waves. The other side is calm, smooth, and perfect for aqua sports. Traveling over to the other side of the island is simplest by taxi or private rental car.

For those looking to rent a car, be sure to use one of the local companies, rather than one of the large multinational firms, as they are more friendly and affordable.

Train

There is no train service on the island of Minorca.

Bus

Mahon/Mao and Ciutadella, where the main stations are located, offer bus routes to many of the regional villages. One limitation to consider when planning to travel throughout Minorca, is the fact that there are not a lot of transfer options and connections.

For example from Cala Galdana, there were only two connections to Mahon (one in the morning, one in the afternoon), and three or four (depending on the weekday) to Ciutadella.

There are different companies that run busses, such as TMSA, AutosFornells, and Torres. Cala Galdana is served by TMSA and the buses are pretty comfortable, and have air-conditioning.

Getting To/From the Airport

Minorca is a relatively small island and there really isn’t anywhere that is too far from the airport. As such, taxi transfers to and from the airport to your place of accommodation, will likely be reasonable in price and not take very long to reach.
