Walking Alone in Amsterdam and Other Warnings and Dangers

Walking Alone

Amsterdam is known for its freedom, use of various drugs, and plenty of partying. Any time you are visiting Amsterdam, there are a few precautions to take, especially at night and when you are walking alone.

Remain Alert at All Times When Walking Through Amsterdam

Both residents and tourists are warned to keep an eye out when walking alone in Amsterdam at night. Amsterdam has a reputation for individuals who sell drugs, weapons, and even sex. Try to avoid contact if you are in an area that you are not familiar with, or if you are out after sunset. If you are approached by anyone who is trying to sell something to you, either walk away or simply inform them you have already purchased the item they are selling and are no longer interested.

Even in popular locations and clubs after dark, try to travel in a group if possible. Many club-goers are there to sell drugs and other paraphernalia and are sometimes not happy when an individual refuses their offer. The back streets of the “Red Light District” are known for dealers. Avoid hard drugs at all costs. There have been recorded cases of muggings and attacks on those who upset dealers even after they have walked away.

Getting Lost

Because of Amsterdam’s intricate city planning, it can be challenging to get from one location to the next. Any time you are in Amsterdam, be sure to have a working GPS available to help find your hotel after a night out in various clubs and bars. If you are unsure of your GPS or if it is simply not working, ask a local shopkeeper or an owner of a restaurant for directions.
