Things to Do in Ayamonte, Spain

Ayamonte Things to Do

Ayamonte is a town in Spain that is situated along the Guadiana River. Although it is only a moderately large town, Ayamonte offers plenty of things to do for travelers visiting the area.

Waterfront

The best beach in Ayamonte is Isla Canela, a sandy island close to the city and connected to it via a small bridge. Tourism has led to the development of a few hotels and many apartments that line the beach from a small distance. The beaches in Ayamonte are similar to those on the Portuguese side of the Guadiana river, with warm water, calm surf, and cooling winds characterizing the area. Finally, along the harbor you’ll find the centrally located marina with the city unfolding around it.

Sightseeing

The main square of Ayamonte sets it apart from other cities in the area. Small but well balanced, the combination of typical construction, tiles, and gardens blend together in a harmonious mix. If you’re visiting, take a moment to admire the buildings around the city. Ayamonte’s magnificent cultural heritage can be seen in its neatly whitewashed houses sitting within the city squares, occaionally interrupted by Baroque churches. The most remarkable detail in the main church of Ayamonte is a Virgin’s image from the 16th century that continues to be venerated. A legend says that it was discovered by fishermen as they sailed close to Castro Marim.

If you have a car, drive a little bit further away from Ayamonte along the main highway where you will see a big bridge before the Portugal-Spain border crossing. There, you’ll arrive in the Andalucia area of Spain, known for its pure-white houses, bright blue skies, lots of sunshine. Flowers, other plants, and palm trees make these scenes even more beautiful.
