Hikkaduwa Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Hikkaduwa Transportation

Hikkaduwa is a small coastal town on the southern tip of Sri Lanka, not far from the city Galle. There are many options for transportation to and around this popular tourist destination.

Train

You can reach Hikkaduwa from Galle by means of multiple public transportation routes. Trains are very cheap in Sri Lanka, though slow and poorly maintained. While not the most efficient form of transportation, they will get you where you are going and allow you to witness a bit of everyday life among locals. The trip from Galle to Hikkaduwa is not a long ride, but keep in mind that it will be hot and train stations will be very crowded, so stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your belongings.

Bus

Most tourists find it more convenient and comfortable to travel by bus than by train to Hikkaduwa. The Hikkaduwa Bus Station is the most common entrance point to the city and offers good bus connections to Colombo, Galle, and all other cities on the way to Colombo. Busses run frequently, are very affordable, and stop at regular intervals along most roads. The bus takes about four hours to reach Colombo depending on the traffic.

Tuk Tuk

For a very real experience of every day Sri Lankan life, you can also jump on a tuk tuk to get almost anywhere you need to go. Tuk Tuks are incredibly cheap and will be a unique experience, but most foreigners do not decide to take them because it is not very comfortable and understanding the routes they take can be difficult.

Taxi

You can easily hire a taxi at the airport from one of several companies. There is also a useful price list on the airport’s website, listing how much you should expect to pay.
