September Spotlight: Berlin Ups the Art Ante

Berlin draws art lovers year-round, but September delivers the most concentrated infusion of creativity. Looking for Old World masters? Done. Contemporary street art? Sure. Pieces from the Cold War? You've got it. And as if visual art weren't enough, the city will turn it up to eleven for its third annual Berlin Music Week.

Here's a rundown of art events this month in Berlin:

  • Art Week Berlin: The first Berlin Art Week unites multiple smaller art events into one week-long festival from September 11 to 16. Preview Berlin Art Fair showcases international newcomers, while abc-art berlin contemporary features more than 150 presentations of current artists. Galleries and museums around the city have special exhibitions throughout the month as well.
  • Stroke Urban Art Fair: This edgy fair, running from September 13 to 16, spotlights the best of urban art, including graffiti, tags, and tattoos. There will also be live performances. Venues around Berlin will host events.
  • Yadegar Asisi's 360-degree Berlin Wall: The artist known for his 360-degree installations will recreate an East Berlin autumn day in the 1980s. The installation debuts September 22 in a cylindrical steel rotunda at Checkpoint Charlie.
  • Berlin Music Week: Big-name acts including The Killers and Franz Ferdinand will perform during Berlin Music Week, running through September 9. More than 40 clubs will host musicians and DJs.
