Product Review: Oxygen Pillow Travel Pillow

What is it: Oxygen Pillow Travel Pillow

Price and Where to Buy: $60, available at European Sleep Works (866-941-5340)

Bad pillows are the arch-nemeses of good vacations, but they’re also a hotel and guest-room standard. Even at otherwise great hotels, the two options seem to always be rock-hard or suffocation-soft. I’m a longtime devotee of the oxygen pillow, a non-weird-shaped and supremely comfortable natural latex foam pillow. But I only recently discovered that the company makes travel pillows as well.

Pros: This pillow comes in different sizes and densities, so you can travel with the one that best suits your body type and sleep style (side, back, stomach). It’s a Goldilocks dream—not too hard, not to soft, just right. It comes with an organic cotton pillow case that can be flipped and rolled to protect and condense the pillow.

Cons: Though it rolls up into a 14 inch by 7 inch log, if you’re traveling with only a carry-on, it may be too much space to sacrifice. And you have to call to order it (rather than ordering online), though since it comes in different sizes you’ll want to talk through the best fit with an expert on the phone anyway.

How it Rates:

  • Usefulness: 10/10 This pillow offers the gift of comfortable sleep in a small package.
  • Value: 9/10. $60 may seem pricey for a pillow until you consider the personal cost of bad sleep and the muscle pain that comes from terrible pillows on vacation.
  • Durability: 9/10. The material wears well and holds up to the rigors of pillowhood.
  • Cool Factor: 10/10. Everything is better, and cooler, when you sleep well. Especially on vacation.

Final Verdict: This pillow—along with water, food, and a modest first-aid kit—is at the top of my stranded-on-a-desert-island packing list.
