Police Arrest Phoenix Pair Who Stole 1,000 Bags

Keith King and Stacy Lynne Legg-King had it down to a science: Walk in to the baggage hall in Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, grab someone's bag, and walk out.

Repeat this nearly 1,000 times.

Yes, the pair was able to steal roughly 1,000 bags from Sky Harbor before police caught on and arrested them both Monday. King was actually nabbed a few weeks ago (for stealing luggage) but was released. Police kept an eye on him, and sure enough, he went right back to work. On Monday, police followed King to the airport, watched as he stole a piece of luggage, and then followed him to his home. The house, it turned out, was in complete chaos, with other people's luggage and clothing strewn everywhere.

Police do not yet know how long the thefts have been going on.

So, down to a science? Maybe, but rocket science it is not. Sky Harbor, like other airports around the nation, long ago stopped checking passengers' baggage claim tickets as a cost savings measure. Instead, the process is entirely up to passengers, and you arrive late to the carousel at your own risk. This allowed the thieves to slip in, grab unclaimed baggage, and slip out with hardly a whiff of suspicion.

As for the travelers whose bags were stolen? Reuniting bags with their owners will be tricky. King and Legg-King (whose relationship to each other is so far unknown) stripped luggage tags and any other identifiers, leaving most of the stolen luggage anonymous. Nevertheless, police will attempt to return as much luggage as possible, and individuals who believe they may be victims of this theft can call 602-262-6151.

Why not hire a Senior Citizen to sit at the luggage exit point? Their pay for the year would have to be less than it cost the airlines to settle claims. In fact, any smart airline could offer a free vacation flight in lieu of salary ... evrybody wins except the thieves.

I have to wonder about how that many airlines pay out 1000 claims for passengers that lost their luggage into Sky Harbor and the actuary and insurance company DID NOT catch onto the problem long before a week ago. This is such a shame. Every large company is looking at the penny saving techniques, and meanwhile losing the whole picture of service. I would gladly pay $2 extra per flight and hire back the people who used to check out claim tickets against our tags. 8 years ago all of those incidental fees were tacked onto tickets and surely by now, we have paid for all the high security equipment time and time again and now they are just using those fees collected to refuel the gas tank and salary increases for the executives. It is time to rethink their processes and take the money that we are already paying in all those fees tacked on, segment fees, 9/11 fees, security fees, etc and really provide those services - security fees SHOULD encompass our luggage. But I am shocked that all those insurance companies paid the travelers the money to temporarily hold them and allow them to purchase items since they were stranded and then pay their insurance claims and this was not picked up sooner - shame on them, but I guess they laid off one too many employees - the one who would have caught onto this scenario much sooner. I feel bad for all the inconvenienced travelers and think Sky Harbor owes MANY hundreds of people HUGE apologies for their lax system.
