More hassles mean more on-time flights?

USA Today's Marilyn Adams writes today that "in an unforeseen twist, new security rules for carry-on bags are enabling airline passengers to get on and off planes faster, helping flights leave on time."

AirTran Airways spokesman Tad Hutcheson tells Adams, "We're boarding airplanes four minutes faster." US Airways, meanwhile, says it is boarding planes "five to 10 minutes faster."

This can all be attributed to the reduction of carry-on items and associated in-aisle congestion. So, while the process of getting to the gate has been perhaps irrevocably changed for the worse, at least more flights are leaving on time.

Then again, that could be a bad thing if you're stuck in the security line.
