Icelandair to increase East Coast flights but drop San Francisco

Air Transport World reports that Icelandair discontinued its San Francisco/Reykjavik flights yesterday, but will increase the frequency of flights to Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Boston, and New York in the spring. The airline will also introduce new service to Bergen, Norway; Gothenburg, Germany; and Halifax, Nova Scotia, from Reykjavik. In all, Icelandair says it will offer 150 flights a week from Reykjavik, up about 17 percent over the 2006 schedule.

Loyal readers of this blog and my monthly adventure travel column for SmarterTravel.com will recall that I spent about a week in Iceland earlier this year trekking through the country's volcanic highlands. I flew Icelandair from Boston, and it struck me then just how convenient it is for those of us on the East Coast—not just if Iceland is your destination, but also if you use Iceland as a midway point on a flight to Europe. I'm happy to see that there will be even more options for those of us on the East Coast, but it's too bad that the airline is dropping San Francisco.
