Carry-On Bags: The Ultimate Guide

Ultimate Guide to Carry-On Luggage

The government is considering a bill that would regulate carry-on size across all airlines. Maybe this will make flying easier, maybe it won't—but everyone can agree that in the meantime, figuring out the different restrictions for each airline is a real hassle. So we decided to put together a chart showing exactly which airlines allow what, from strollers to pets and, of course, carry-on size.

So without further ado, I give you Carry-On Bags: the Ultimate Guide (.pdf). It's free to download, so go ahead!

As with our other charts—Airline Fees: the Ultimate Guide and Frequent Flyer Fees: the Ultimate Guide (noticing a pattern?)—we'll update the new chart regularly. And we always welcome suggestions from you for ways to improve the chart.

Love the carry-on chart, but would you please include some international carriers, such as BA, Virgin and Air Canada? Thanks and keep up the great work.

I totally agree with zaxoma about having international airlines too on all of your charts as it's important to know & sometimes harder to find out on foreign carriers. Thanks!

Suggestion - One more piece of info you can add. Not all airlines return their gate-checked items to the jet-way. Some airlines send them to baggage claim (we found that out the hard way!) For instance the last time on Continental we picked up our gate-checked items on the jetway as we exited the plane. Last time on Spirit we had to pick up our gate-checked items at baggage claim -- very inconvenient! Thanx for always being so helpful!

wish we had the chart last week for our first trip to Europe. We had no trouble flying to Europe with 3 checked bags and 2 carryon bags but flying from Berlin to Stockholm on Air Berlin we were caught with overweight carryon bags and had to pay 80 euros to check it as a 4th bag. On our research for the airline we did not find a weight limit for carryon bags. We saw many people with weighted carryon bags at the boarding gate. We wonder if we, being American, were discriminated against and fined extra fees that German nationals did not have to pay. This was unexpected and we had no recourse but to pay the fee.
