The leaves have only just begun to fall, so you may still be reminiscing about summer beach days rather than thinking ahead to Thanksgiving—but if you’re planning to travel for the holiday, now is the time to start preparing.

According to Expedia’s Holiday Travel Outlook, the best time to book flights for Thanksgiving is by September 27 for international flights, and October 27 for domestic flights. Travelers who plan ahead can save an average of $60 to $70 by booking early.

“Timing is everything,” said Melanie Fish, head of public relations for Expedia Group brands.

  • The Best Days to Fly for Thanksgiving

  • Expedia’s data shows that the cheapest day to depart for Thanksgiving is Monday, November 24, and Sunday, November 30, is the cheapest day to return.

Travelers should avoid flying on Wednesday, November 26, and Friday, November 28, which are projected to be the busiest and most expensive travel days.

  • Thanksgiving Travel Tips

    • Book morning flights: Flights before 9 a.m. are 57% less likely to be canceled than evening departures.
    • Plan for airport crowds: Allow extra time for check-in, security screening, and navigating packed terminals.
    • Ship gifts instead of carrying them: Wrapped presents may be unwrapped during TSA checks. To save stress, consider mailing gifts in advance.
    • Be strategic with luggage: Expect full flights and limited overhead bin space, and be prepared to gate-check your carry-on. Place an Apple AirTag or other tracker in your bag to keep an electronic eye on it, and store any valuable gifts in your personal item that you can keep with you.
    • Download airline apps: Real-time updates and fast rebooking can come in handy if your flight is delayed or cancelled.
    • Travel with snacks: Airport food lines can be long around Thanksgiving, so pack some food to tide you over.

If you’re flying home with Thanksgiving leftovers, remember the TSA’s liquid rule: “If you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, and it’s larger than 3.4 ounces, it belongs in a checked bag.”

The TSA allows these foods to be carried on in any quantity:

    • Baked goods
    • Stuffing
    • Casseroles
    • Macaroni and cheese

However, you should plan to pack these Thanksgiving treats in your checked bags if they’re above 3.4 ounces:

    • Cranberry sauce
    • Gravy
    • Wine
    • Canned fruit or vegetables
    • Preserves, jams, and jellies
    • Maple syrup
