Virgin America kicked off its Boston service with an unusual press conference (check out our photo gallery and you’ll see what I mean by “unusual”), and will now fly to Los Angeles and San Francisco from Boston’s Logan Airport. Virgin’s Boston flights are also the carrier’s first to be enabled with Wi-Fi, which Virgin hopes to offer on all flights within months. The service costs $9.95 for flights three hours or less, and $12.95 for longer trips.
The press conference was mostly lighthearted (Branson responded to recent questions about Virgin America’s legitimacy as a domestic carrier by revealing several small American flags tucked into the rear of his pants), but service out of Boston is becoming serious business. Shortly after Virgin announced its move to Boston in December, American and JetBlue increased service from Beantown, including flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco. Competition for those West Coast routes is likely to be intense, particularly between Virgin and JetBlue.
