United, Delta, others hike fares again

Citing the high cost of jet fuel, United led the latest round of fare increases late last week, raising domestic fares by as much as $10 round-trip for flights of less than 1,500 miles, and $20 for flights longer than 1,500 miles. Continental and Delta matched the increase.

The fare hike applies to about 90 percent of United’s domestic routes, including those on which it competes with low-fare carriers such as Southwest and Frontier. If it sticks, this increase will be the eighth successful fare hike so far this year.
