Tips on Bronx Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Bronx Warnings and Dangers

The Bronx has some legendary places to visit, including the Bronx Zoo and Yankee Stadium. BB=ut there are some areas to avoid and warnings that should be taken into consideration before any visit.

Crime and Violence

The Bronx has a reputation for being a violent and dangerous place to visit. As with any major metropolitan area, there is some truth to these concerns, however, in a lot of ways, the dangers of the Bronx have been somewhat exaggerated, and many people feel completely safe maneuvering around the Bronx, particularly during the daytime hours.

There are incidents of gang violence, particularly among teens, but panhandling and questionable street vendors are more of a danger to tourists and visitors. People selling fake metro cards and soliciting money are common experiences in the Bronx.  Making sure to only purchase transportation cards through the proper channels is the easiest way to avoid falling victim to this type of crime. One of the most infamous areas in the Bronx for this type of behavior is around Fordham; avoid this area, particularly at night, and don’t purchase any metro cards from someone on the street.

When visiting the Bronx, or any major city, use common sense.  You can greatly reduce your risk of falling victim to muggings or other violent crimes simply by not flaunting jewelry or cash, avoiding closed-in or dark alleyways, and not interacting with individuals who seem sketchy or are trying to sell you something for a “too good to be true” price.

Don’t walk around neighborhoods or areas that you are unfamiliar with at night, and remain observant, vigilant, and aware of your surroundings.  If something feels off or someone seems suspicious, move along as quickly as you can.  There are plenty of stores and restaurants that you could quickly duck into for help if necessary.

Recreation and Public Areas

Swimming at any beaches in the Bronx is not recommended.  The Hudson River has a reputation for being extremely polluted. Swimming in the river, or along any of its beaches, is strongly discouraged.

Take extreme care and be very observant when taking children to playgrounds in the Bronx. Many parents have found objects such as broken glass and drug paraphernalia, including needles.

When visiting the Bronx, beware of consuming any seafood that has been caught or harvested from the Hudson River. Crabs, fish, and any other consumable seafood item taken from the river could be hazardous to your health because of the pollution. If you can’t authenticate the source of the seafood you are considering eating, choose something else.
