Travel doesn’t start when you hit the road, and it doesn’t end when you arrive home. That’s why at SmarterTravel, we deliver expert travel tips, inspiring destination stories, and timely travel news—because we want to feed our readers’ passion for travel before, during, and after each trip.
Since 1998, we’ve worked hard to bring our readers the most interesting, useful, and exciting travel information on the Web. We average more than 25 million unique visitors and 120 million page views per year, and we are a proud member of the TripAdvisor Media Group. Our stories also appear on USA Today, Huffington Post, TripAdvisor, and Business Insider, among others, via syndication relationships.
What We’re Looking For
SmarterTravel accepts multi-page slideshows and both short- and feature-length stories on a range of consumer travel topics, including booking strategies, saving money, avoiding scams, packing tips, best places to go, travel tech, travel trends, and travel tips that represent all kinds of travelers and travel experiences.
We also publish destination content, but prefer thematic round-ups that highlight multiple destinations (for example, “Europe’s Cheapest Cities,” “Destinations You Have to See To Believe,” and “Beaches That Should Be on Your Bucket List”). Occasionally, we’ll publish single destination stories, but those tend to be based on either hot/popular destinations or places that embody the notion of discovery (think “secret,” “surprising,” or “lesser-known” places).
Qualities of Successful Pitches
We love pitches that show the writer understands our tone and style (informative, savvy, and accessible) and that outline the methodology he or she will use for the story (for example, looking at DOT data, interviewing flight attendants, curating social media influencers, or personal experiences).
Spend some time familiarizing yourself with the tone and content of SmarterTravel. In your pitch, offer reasons why you think your story will be a top performer. Is it timely? Will it have long-tail SEO value? Is it a trending topic on social media? Be sure to also give clear examples of what you’re planning on covering (such as specific destinations, activities, or themes) and offer a takeaway for the reader. As a consumer publication, we’re careful to include useful advice in every story.
Submissions and Reponses
Please send your story pitches to email@example.com. Use the phrase “Editorial Submission” in the subject line. Put your query or submission in the body of the email, not as an attachment. Feel free to also include a small sample of clips or URLs that point to your previously published work. We will not open unsolicited email attachments.
We try to respond to all inquiries, but are sometimes unable to do so. If we have not responded to your query within a month, please assume we will not be able to publish your submission.
We pay $500 for long-form articles and multi-page slideshows, and $100 to $250 for shorter posts.
