For the past 34 years, the Wright Amendment has limited Southwest’s flights from Dallas Love Field to nine states, including Texas. Those constraints will be lifted on October 13, when the Wright Amendment expires.
Southwest announced its plans for Love Field in the post-Wright era, including a total of 15 new nonstop flights launched in two waves:
- On October 13, flights to Baltimore/Washington, Denver, Las Vegas, Orlando, and Chicago Midway
- On November 2, flights to Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York LaGuardia, Phoenix, Orange County, San Diego, Tampa, and Washington Reagan National
Love Field is just six miles from downtown Dallas, making it much more convenient than Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport, American’s primary hub airport, which sits midway between Dallas and Fort Worth. Indeed Southwest’s new Love Field flights will compete primarily against American’s DFW flights. And that competition should keep airfares to and from the Dallas area in check, and spur some bonus-mile promotions as well.
There may also be head-to-head competition with Delta, which is already selling tickets from Love Field to New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Detroit. Delta has no gates at Love Field, but is counting on picking up the two gates American was forced to vacate in order to appease regulators in the run-up to its merger with US Airways.
