Warnings and Dangers in Athens
Greece is a safe country, especially Athens with many tourists exploring at night. But, you must beware of some of these common scams.
El Greco and Syntagma Square
Be aware of your surroundings near Syntagma Square. There are several seemingly friendly and outgoing elderly men who may invite you to the bar El Greco for a drink: They may order you a drink spiked with a strong drug so they can take your money, credit cards and perhaps your passport. Watch out for the El Greco Bar and anyone buying you drinks.
Hollywood Bar and False Police
This bar charges outrageous sums for basic cocktails. For example, tourists can be asked to pay $150 euro for two drinks.
Beware of false policemen working in the Makriyanni district in the nice neighborhood. There are tales of tourists being robbed by men pretending to be plain-clothed police officers. Always study the police badge if you’re approached by authorities, and ask to go to the police station to get things sorted out or call for help if you’re unsure.
