Love Stinks … Literally! (Grossest V-Day Package EVER)

Can’t get a Valentine’s Day reservation for a New York City restaurant or tickets to a hot Broadway play? We’re pretty sure there will be spots open on this NYC V-Day getaway: a tour of Brooklyn’s Newton Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. (Although, there’s always the Waffle House or Pizza Hut’s special dinner options.) Not sold on the romance value of a sewage-treatment plant? According to the NY Daily News, the tour ends on top of the “digester eggs” (which break down human waste), offering a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline (but you have to look beyond the view of the sewage plant in the forefront).

On the tour, lovers will literally be able to see where that rich romantic dinner ends up as its final destination, so it’s a good thing it’s early in the morning. (If you’re planning on popping the question, better hold on tight to that ring ’til later—we doubt you’d want to fish it out of the sludge.) It’s going to be hard to unsee the things you see on this tour, so if you’re trying to set the mood, this tour may be better reserved for a singles “love stinks” outing, than for couples.

The plant runs tours every month, but in honor of Valentine’s Day, visitors between 9:30am and 11:30am on Valentine’s Day will get a free Hershey’s Kiss, since they’ve obviously worked up an appetite for chocolate after seeing rivers of brown things. (Please, wash your hands before you eat it.)

Seriously, though, if you’re that hard up for romantic Valentine’s Day dates in New York City, check out some of these ready-made-romance hotel deals at the St. Giles or Sanctuary. Or just fly (check rates to New York) and walk around the city—New York City’s air will seem sweet and fresh compared to the alternative.
