Need a little more joy in your life? Plan a trip to one of the countries ranked as the happiest in the world. The annual World Happiness Report, compiled by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, surveys more than 100,000 residents in over 140 countries to determine which nations are the happiest.

The happiness ranking is derived from responses to a single life evaluation question known as the Cantril Ladder. This approach asks participants to imagine a ladder with steps numbered from 0 at the bottom (representing the worst possible life for them) to 10 at the top (representing the best possible life). Each respondent is then asked:

“On which step of the ladder would you say you personally feel you stand at this time?”

This method emphasizes self-assessed life evaluation rather than imposing external criteria of happiness or well-being, allowing individuals across different countries and backgrounds to define what constitutes a good life for themselves. Notably, the question avoids specific terms such as "happiness," "wellbeing," or "satisfaction," which makes it easier to translate and interpret across languages and societies.

Nordic countries continue to rank as the happiest in the world, with Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden dominating the top four spots. Finland claimed the title as the world’s happiest country for the eighth consecutive year.

The United States dropped to 24th place in the global happiness rankings, slipping one spot from last year.

This year’s report emphasized the importance of “caring and sharing” in shaping overall happiness. One notable example explored the impact of shared meals. Researchers found that regularly dining with others significantly boosts well-being, even after accounting for household size. Conversely, eating alone was linked to lower happiness levels. The growing trend of solitary meals is cited as a contributing factor to the decline in well-being across the U.S.
