Earn Double Miles for American, JAL Flights to Asia

Bonus miles for flights? These days, not much.

With the airlines flying more than 80 percent full, there’s been little reason to offer anything in the way of extra incentives recently.

Although this new AAdvantage promotion is a welcome exception, its limitation to pricier tickets puts it out of reach for many travelers.

Offer Details

Through December 15, AAdvantage members can earn double miles for American and Japan Airlines flights between North America and Asia. Bonus-eligible fares include first and business fares booked in F, A, P, J, R, D, or I, and economy-class fares booked in Y, B, or H on American- or US Airways-marketed flights; first and business fares booked in F, A, J, C, D, X, or I, and economy-class fares booked in W, E, Y, B, or H on Japan Airlines-marketed flights.

Registration is required.

Deal or No Deal

These are long flights, so double miles can add up quickly. The problem for the average leisure travelers is the qualifying fare types.

The great majority of passengers on any given flight are traveling on discounted coach fares, which must be purchased in advance and are generally highly restricted when it comes to refunds, rerouting, and the like. And it is exactly those fares that are excluded from eligibility for this bonus offer.

If you plan to visit Asia during the promotion period, and will be traveling on a first or business or non-discounted coach fare, by all means consider flying American or JAL to boost your mileage balance. But for most, these bonus miles are a non-factor.
