    Renting a car in a foreign country can be stressful, from navigating road signs in foreign languages to unfamiliar traffic laws. If you think the challenge only begins after you leave the lot with your rental, you may be missing a crucial step: acquiring an international driver’s license.

    An international driver's license, also called an international driving permit (IDP), is an official document accepted in 150 countries that translates your legal driver's license into ten languages. An IDP is not a standalone license; drivers must carry their original license obtained in their home country in addition to their IDP.

  • Do You Need an International Driver's License?

    • The answer is: it depends. Certain destinations require renters to carry an international driver's license to operate a vehicle, while others don't. Regardless of legal requirements, it is always helpful to have one on hand to navigate language barriers and miscommunications if you are pulled over.

    According to AutoEurope, United States citizens are required to carry an international driver’s license to operate vehicles in:

  • How to Apply for an International Driver’s License?

    • The only organization authorized to distribute international driver's licenses in the United States is the American Automobile Association, or AAA. Licenses obtained through any other service will not be valid. 

    The IDP application form is available for download on the AAA website. Travelers can apply for an IDP in person or by mail (unfortunately, there is no online option). Bring the completed form to an AAA center along with two passport photos, your driver's license, and $20 for the permit fee. To apply by mail, send a photocopy of your license, two passport photos with your signature on the back, and the permit fee. Make sure to build in extra time for shipping when applying via mail.
