Ogunquit

About

Ogunquit, one of Maine's most popular resort towns, caters to families and tourists without losing its reputation as a hip artist colony. Visitors and locals alike enjoy walking along the rocky coastline on Marginal Way, a 1.5-mile long paved pathway that offers views of the ocean year-round. Ogunquit Beach may be the city's biggest draw, as its three-plus miles of white sand provide plenty of room to spread out and soak in some rays during the summer. Ogunquit tourism also focuses on the town's standing as a gay and lesbian destination and as a stylish art colony, and there are plenty of galleries for travelers to browse through (especially in and around Perkins Cove). The seasonal Ogunquit Museum of American Art offers a cliff-side ocean view, as well as more than 1,500 works of Maine- and American-inspired works. The closest airport to Ogunquit is Portland International Jetport, about 40 minutes away. The New England town is also served by Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, about an hour away, and Boston's Logan Airport, about an hour and a half away from the city center.

When To Go

With three miles of public beaches and a one-and-a-half mile cliff walk, Ogunquit is a prime summer vacation destination. The most popular time to visit is mid-June through August, when the weather is warm and schools are on break. Fewer visitors come in the winter, when it gets cold and some businesses close. Even though it's not necessarily beach weather, spring and fall can be ideal times to visit for fewer crowds, lower prices, and special events.

high season: mid-June to August
low season: mid-December to March
shoulder season: April to mid--June, September to mid--December

Weather Information

Ogunquit experiences four seasons, with average high temperatures reaching into the 70s in summer and dropping into the 30s and low 40s in winter. Spring and fall see high temperatures ranging between the 40s and 60s. Rain is common throughout the year, but the heaviest rain falls in October.

Crowd Information

Along with the busy summer months, events also attract crowds, including Patriots' Day Weekend Celebration in April, the Sidewalk Art Show and Sale in August, Capriccio in September, OgunquitFest in late October, and Christmas by the Sea two weeks after Thanksgiving.

Closure Information

Hotels, restaurants, and attractions are more likely to close between mid-December and mid-April, or between Christmas by the Sea and Patriots' Day.

When to Save

The most expensive time to visit is during July and August, when the beachgoers show up. Winter is the least expensive time to go, as it's too cold for the beach.
