Kansas

When To Go

Kansas experiences four diverse seasons, but the best time to visit varies from region to region. For instance, Flint Hills' wildflowers bloom in late spring, while the trees along the eastern edge of the state turn bright autumn colors in mid-October. For most of the state, summer is the most popular time to visit, mainly because schools are on break and the warm weather offers ideal conditions for those traveling by car. The fall can also be an ideal time to visit, because it is characterized by mild weather and less rain than summer. Kansas also hosts many conventions, with the highest number taking place in the spring and fall.

high season: April to October
low season: January to February
shoulder season: March, November to December

Weather Information

Kansas is a four-season destination that is the most pleasant between the warm months of April and October. Late fall and early spring can be favorable as well, but also unpredictable. The winters can be cold, especially in January. Snowfall is expected, but melts after only a few days. However, snowstorms can blow into western Kansas from the Colorado Rockies, closing the Interstate, where gates at the entrance ramps will restrict access, for several days. Summers can be hot and dry, with a chance of tornadoes in May and June. July and August have the heaviest rainfall, but also the most daylight. Fall sees less rain and milder temperatures, averaging afternoon highs of 80 degrees.

Crowd Information

The heaviest visitor traffic occurs during conventions in the larger cities like Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka, Salina, and Lawrence, with schedules that vary by city.

Closure Information

Most hotels, restaurants, and venues remain open throughout the year. However, some attractions reduce their hours or close from November through March.

When to Save

Kansas consistently ranks as one of the least expensive states to visit in the nation, and prices remain relatively consistent year-round.

When to Book

Flexible travel plans may make it possible to take advantage of low last-minute airfares. However, those with a set schedule should book at least three weeks in advance to obtain lower prices, especially for travel during the high season. Because Kansas is a driving state, many people successfully book a room on the day of arrival. However, it's a good idea to make reservations before hitting the road, for bed and breakfast stays, when there are special events, and for rooms in major cities during convention season. Book one to two weeks in advance for individual rooms and several weeks or even months ahead for groups.
